On July 10th, Sujit Choudhry joined top constitutional experts to discuss the semi-presidential system used in Ukraine. The conference, which was held in Kiev, discussed the challenges that the governance system was facing and the ways through which such problems could be solved. Choudhry is the director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions. Several think tanks made up of the center of policy and legal reforms, the international institute for democracy, and electorates attended the conference. Intergovernmental organizations also took part in the workshop.
Speaking during the event, the law professor noted that he was privileged to discuss executive powers with other distinguished experts in the field. Sujit Choudhry noted that the workshop was critical due to the instability of Ukraine’s democratization. He noted that the instability was caused by the concentration of presidential powers, the country’s legislature electoral system, and the weak political parties in the Eastern European nation. Some of the experts who attended the event included Thomas Sidelius of Dalama University and Sumit Bisarya of International IDEA. Human Rights’ representative in Ukraine Vladimir Vasilenko, Ukraine’s constitutional commission member Sergyi Holovatyi, and Supreme Court’s president representative Viktor Musiaka were also present. These professionals have loads of knowledge and experience on governance and democracy. In addition, they have served as constitutional advisors to several countries across the globe.
Sujit Choudhry has been a critical constitutional advisor to different countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
